Sunflower (Re)Flections (Ode to Van Gogh)
dr.Semente (b.1993), Sunflower (Re)Flections (Ode to Van Gogh), 2022, oil, acrylic, and pen on canvas, 8 x 10 in.
This piece is about clarity and human mirroring. It is about the unique places we see ourselves in/out of history and how this informs our walk in life. As a teen, I loved Vincent van Gogh’s sunflowers 🌻 but did not yet know his significance in the cannon of art history. I just had a print in my room, because I liked it. As I got older and more educated I felt pushed out of what was “art history” due to my identities, while being praised (and questioned) for my talent. Yet, I’ve always resonated with this Dutch, Aries ♈️ man, and his work, who seemed to see it all so clearly, yet lived with a blurred, distorted vision around what to do with all that he saw. This ode is a prayer that artists may live long and profitable lives without spiraling into despair to be considered legendary.
This is a one of a kind, original work of art. It was made on the last year of my 20s while I completed my PhD.
